BYBI Beauty – The Sustainable Beauty Pioneers

BYBI Beauty, Instagram’s most aesthetic brand, is one of the most sustainable beauty brands out there. Trust me, you have NO idea what it takes to be truly sustainable in the beauty industry… but BYBI do (and you’re about to).

Have you ever thought about how sustainable your beauty products are, and I mean really thought? My guess is probably not, and hey, you’re not alone there!Β But let me tell you right now, BYBI have definitely thought about it. They’re always thinking about it.

Most brands and most consumers judge the sustainability of their products by how eco-friendly their packaging is – whether it’s made of glass rather than plastic, whether it can be recycled or whether the box it comes in can be recycled too. However, it goes sooo much deeper than that.

BYBI’s aim is to make sure that all aspects of their supply chain is sustainable, with focus on three key areas: ingredients, manufacturing and packaging. They want to be leaders within the beauty industry and to influence other brands to take note and do better.

INGREDIENTS

A BYBI ingredient is always one that grows in abundance and ethically sourced – double points if it is locally sourced. The distance ingredients have to travel obviously have carbon implications! They actively look for ingredients that grow quickly and locally that can be harvested multiple times a year.Β  BYBI’s shea butter supplier have a program that supports and empowers women in West Africa to keep growing and to smash life!

One of the coolest things that BYBI does (that youΒ mightΒ already be aware of) is that they take ‘waste’ products from other industries and upcycle them. This is the case for the Strawberry and Blueberry boosters – discarded seeds from the juicing industry are collected, sterilised and cold pressed to create beeeautiful, high quality oils. Because these seeds were ‘waste product’ and the fruits weren’t grown solely to harvest the seeds, the entire process is carbon neutral!

Stepping away from BYBI, consider this. Most products have more than one ingredient, with some products having over 30(!?) – can you imagine trying to keep track of all of the above for that many ingredients!? BYBI are setting a very high bar but it’s a bar that companies need to try harder to reach.

MANUFACTURING

This is probably the hardest part of the supply chain to make sustainable. As lots of companies tend to outsource this step, brands have to rely on the manufacturers to give them accurate and truthful information on how sustainable their process is (which often doesn’t happen). BYBI’s products are made in the UK and have strict requirements that their manufacturers must adhere to. Ultimately, BYBI want to own the manufacturing process, but obviously there is quite a significant cost attached to that. They currently control the manufacturing of the Boosters at their facility in West London where they produce small batches by hand. By producing the Boosters, they’re able to have full control of the water and energy usage while keeping carbon emissions low.

PACKAGING

Although it’s great that brands are focusing on more eco-friendly packaging, it is the bare minimum that they should be doing. Over 120 billion units of packaging are produced by the beauty industry alone, so you can only imagine the amount of waste!

70% of BYBI’s packaging is glass, which is infinitely recyclable and come from sand – a natural material that’s available in abundance. Glass bottles and jars keep their integrity when recycled so they can use the same container over and over again.Β Tubes pose a greater challenge. However, BYBI have found a plastic alternative made from sugarcane. Sugarcane is obviously renewable, grows very quickly and absorbs CO2 when it grows – making the product carbon neutral! The growing of the sugarcane absorbs CO2, making this a carbon neutral produced material. On top of all this, BYBI has recently changed their parcel packaging to grasspaper – it grows much quicker than trees and is way more plentiful as a result!

They acknowledge that their packaging is far from perfect at the moment but that they are always looking for better alternatives.Β As there are so many new materials coming onto the market all the time, BYBI are always on the lookout for more eco-friendly packaging to move away from plastics entirely.

BYBI Beauty Bakuchiol Booster and Strawberry Booster

However, don’t confuse this with just a passing ‘trend’.

‘It’s a movement, not a moment’.

Hell to the yes ladies! As someone who is environmentally minded, finding out ALL of this about BYBI has just made me love them so much more. It’s really made me look at brands in a different way and consider my own environmental impact more.

The vast majority of this information is freely available on BYBI’s website and is really easy to find. It’s really admirable that the brand are so open about their sustainable practises – I’ve been trying to do some research on other brands to compare them and it is not nearly as easy to find the rest. Hat’s off to you BYBI – taking the lead and showing us all how it’s done!

Beautaniq Beauty Review

What’s more fun than testing new makeup!? This time round, I’m testing out a load of goodies from Beautaniq Beauty – a cruelty free and vegan beauty brand that focuses on plant-based, natural products.

Beautaniq Beauty were find enough to *gift* me a whole host of their products and I’ve had so much fun testing them all out! The products range from skincare to makeup and are all in the cutest packaging!

Nourish + Hydrate Sheet Mask

fullsizeoutput_37a1

The Nourish + Hydrate sheet mask is for sheet mask lovers everywhere who need a little pick me up. It contains bamboo extract to provide long lasting hydration and helps to replenish collagen; lotus seed to strengthen the skin’s barrier and helps to improve texture; hyaluronic acid to leave skin firm, plump and supple and finally niacinamide to improve elasticity and help your skin to retain all this lovely moisture and hydration.

If you are someone who likes a mask with a lot of juice (and who doesn’t!?) then you will LOVE this. The fit is probably a bit on the bigger side, but it means that your jaw can get in on the action too! It left my skin feeling really hydrated and plump and was a great base to put skincare over the top. It was a bit tacky after the juice had dried down, but once you apply more products it’s not an issue. I’m not a great lover of sheet masks, but this did make me feel as though my PM skincare routine was applying more smoothly and it left my skin feeling softer and plumper than before.

Guardian Angel Eye Mask

Okay these are easily the cutest things that Beautaniq Beauty make. They are under eye patches that are shaped like angel’s wings – look how cute they are! The patches are infused with with a whole host of fab ingredients.Β The cucumber extract contains ascorbic acid aka vitamin C to make the skin glow, but also helping to soothe irritated skin and reduce any swelling or puffiness around the eyes. Rose extract also has anti-inflammatory benefits, while green tea works to promote DNA repair to keep skin looking fresh and to fight the signs of ageing. Finally Hyaluronic Acid leaves skin firm, plump and hydrated.

You can wear these either way (aka the circular part near the nose or on the outside towards the ear) and they are nice and thin so they’re easy to move around. They left my under eye area feeling really soft and full for hours afterwards!

Nourishing Mascara

I really like that this came in a wooden tube rather than having a plastic wrapper. There is still a bit of waste, however at least it would be recyclable. The tube looks like a bigger version of the blush/glow serums, which is pretty unique for a mascara! This is quite a natural mascara that doesn’t quite give me the definition I’m looking for. My theory is that when you take the mascara wand out of the tube that product gets stuck to the top and bottom of the wand, but tends to miss the sides (where you’d tend to apply to the eyelashes). It may be that my one is a little dry, but when I apply it to the lashes, it’s as if there isn’t really any product on the wand. I would have to use another mascara on top of this to get my desired fullness.

Fill + Set Brow Gel

The idea of this brow gel, as the name suggests, is to fill in, thicken and tame the brows. It’s a really light, water-based formula enriched with Aloe Vera to keep brows locked in place without any flaking or fading throughout the day. The brow gel comes in blonde, brown, black and clear, so there should be an option that works for you. This is actually the first tinted brow gel that I’ve ever tried but I found it pretty easy to use. It has really good, even pigment that was not patchy in the slightest. The brush is nice and small so it can get to all the fine hairs and can get a really good sharp tail on the end of the brow. I do tend to use a clear gel afterwards to get the line super sharp on the tail but the tinted gel is capable of doing all the heavy lifting.Β  I went for the shade blonde and it is a pretty good match for my hair colour. I do think there is a definite red tint to it that is worth noting, but I noticed this more as my brow dye wore off (and probably where I was applying it more to my skin rather than the brow). Like most other tinted brow gels, I think it really helps to have some brow to start with, whether that means you have quite thick brows or you dye them so they actually show up. The first time I used this I was so chuffed with the result, but as the dye on my brows began to fade, this got harder to use! I don’t put that down to the product because I can’t even see the hairs to draw them on! If you’re new to brow gel/have no eyebrows (like me) then it may take a little time to master tinted brow gel, but overall the effect is fab! You will probably need to add in a few hair strokes with pencil, but it definitely does what it says on the tin.

Butter Lip and Cheek

9550eb3f-a0a5-4c73-a024-820edc052573

These are a dual purpose lip and cheek product that will give you beautifully bitten lips and flushed cheeks with just one product. I got the shade Cocoa Rose, which is a gorgeous pinky nude shade. The formula is a little on the dry side for a balm which made it a bit of a long and repetitive process to apply it to the lips, however the dry formula would probably benefit the cheeks more. However, a major perk is that I think this product would last you absolutely ages because I’ve used quite a bit and I haven’t even made a dent in it!

Blush Serum

I got the blush serum in the shade sunset and it’s a gorgeous pinky-orange shade – just like the sky at sunset! If you are familiar with the Glossier Cloud Paints then this is probably what they are most comparable to. The blush serum comes in a little tube, just like the cloud paint and a little bit goes a long way! You could apply this in so many different ways – with your fingers, a sponge or a duo-fibre brush – depending on your preference. I personally prefer to apply this with a brush to get a light flush rather than something more pigmented. When you squeeze the product out the tube, just like any other product in this form, it is quite easy to squeeze out too much. You only need the tiniest bit to get a great colour, so be very sparing! If you do find yourself squeezing too much out, it’s quite easy to scoop it up and put it back in.

Glow Serum

This glow serum is a really intense liquid highlight. It is a cool-toned bronze shade that, for me, would be a little too dark as a traditional highlighter over makeup. However, the way I like to use this is as a base highlight – that is underneath my foundation to give my skin some serious glow! One thing worth mentioning is that, like the blush serum, this has some serious pigment, so use it sparingly! I tend to wear quite light-medium coverage base products and my foundation still completely covered the bronze colour while still leaving the glow. If you’re using an ultra-light coverage base product, you will probably resemble a bronze statue rather than a glowing goddess (hey, if that’s the look you’re after, then go for your life). If you are medium-dark, you will probably really suit this as a traditional liquid highlighter but if you’re paler then it is a great base glow.

Overall I really enjoyed trying all the products from Beautaniq Beauty! Their packaging is super cute, their shades are gorgeous and their skincare is fab!

If you’re interested in purchasing from the brand, you can find them at the Beautaniq Beauty website or at Birchbox!

The Meghan Markle effect

Everywhere you look on social media; there are pictures of beautifully made up women that set unattainable beauty standards for the average girl. It has also started to dictate what we perceive as beautiful. Wearing little or no make up either leads to questions about whether you’re okay/ill or applauded as brave for leaving the house in your natural state. Dramatic, full coverage make up has become the norm – not just for special occasions but for every day wear too. Hey, I love full coverage – don’t get me wrong – but there comes a point where individuality starts to fade away and uniformity runs rife. Β

Enter Ms. Meghan Markle.

Meghan is a truly beautiful woman, and to put that before all her other aspirational qualities does feel somewhat unjust. We all know who she as – as a Brit I’ve seen her picture non-stop since her engagement to Prince Harry, and in the run up to the wedding her face has graced the cover of nearly every magazine and newspaper in the country.

Image result for meghan markle frecklesWhen she stepped out of that wedding car at 11:59am on Saturday 19th May, the world leaned towards their television screen get a better look at her. What is her dress like? What’s her make up like? The dress was perhaps simpler than we expected – Meghan is a fashionable woman and known for doing things her way. Many people expected a more edgy gown for the American actress breaking through all the barriers to enter the British royal family. However, you can bet the popularity of that style of wedding dress is about to go through the ROOF. The simplicity of her look didn’t end there. Once her veil was lifted in St George’s Chapel, her make up was natural and absolutely flawless. Her skin glowed and her freckles were clearly visible. Her lips were not coated in a heavy lipstick or even a gloss, but just looked lightly coloured by a tinted lip balm. There was a subtle smokey eye, but sheΒ radiated natural beauty.

Β  Β  Β  Β  Β  Β  Β  Β  Β  Β  Β  Β  Β  Β  Β  Β  Β THIS. IS. WHAT. WE. HAVE. BEEN. WAITING. FOR.

On her wedding day she made the ultimate statement – She represented exactly who she is with complete disregard for the opinions of the billions that were watching. Did we expect that little makeup? Definitely not. But did we absolutely love it? Hell yeah we did. It only takes one spark to start a fire and I seriously believe that she will be the catalyst to propel the natural beauty trend to the forefront. Freckles are completely normal, but seeing such a high profile celebrity embracing theirs normalises them and sets the example for others. Meghan has spoken out time and time again against photoΒ retouchers and makeup artists who try to cover her freckles, quoting a phrase her father used to tell her – β€˜a face without freckles is like a sky without stars’. For a long time now, people have been encouraged to cover up their β€˜imperfections’ – anything that means your skin is not a flat, even colour should be hidden. So many women on social media have already come forward siting Meghan’s light make up as inspiration to embrace their own skin – myself included. So far this week, I have worn no face make up to show my forehead freckles, and only mascara and light brows. She’s not the first person to show off her freckles, and she won’t be the last, but what makes her different is that the world watches her and she has an enormous, global reach. Image result for meghan markle freckles

She has the potential to start a beauty revolution. It’s time for Instagram make up to step aside. It has had its day in the sun. I’m really hoping that by having such a high profile person (nearly 2 BILLION people watched the wedding) embracing her natural beauty, others will quickly follow suit. I mean, it’s already encouraged fellow freckle faces to embrace their own skin, but I think it will go further. Every girl I have spoken to about the wedding loved how understated her make up was – not a single person commented that for such an occasion she should have worn more. We aren’t used to seeing it – not on our favourite celebrities or in the mainstream media. We are used to seeing Kardashian contour and Jenner lips (that family basically sets the standard for the female population of the world) and this COULD NOT be further from that. It might only be make up, but her wedding look made a statement. You don’t need have a Kardashian contour to capture the heart of a prince.

I love make up. I love applying it, I love playing with it and I love how it makes me look. But, I am also ready for it to be okay for women not to be held to such a high standard of artificial beauty where women feel like they have to contour their face to make it thinner or use lip plumper so their lips look bigger. If Meghan represents anything, it’s that you are beautiful exactly as you are. She embraces what makes her unique and absolutely rocks it.Β

… and, y’know, she had the entire world saying how beautiful she was. No big deal.
